PCB Membrane Switches

Details of Flex & Rigid Membrane Switches
The circuit of membrane switches can be flex and rigid. It depends on the customer end application and also related to the cost budget and other considerations. For example, life, resistance, connection type on the mainboard, etc.

Usually if the membrane switches need assembled many LEDs, then we suggest to use FPC circuit, it can get more stable LED soldering quality. For the normal application the PET circuit is enough, which is more economical. In addition if the conductor pitch is 0.5mm, although we also can print it, but we still suggest to use FPC circuit. Because of that 0.5mm pitch is too small and it is easy to occur the short circuit problem.

For the Rigid circuit membrane switches, the circuit is rigid printed circuit board. The material of rigid PCB is usually FR4 and Copper. By this type of membrane switch, the connector usually is the SMD connector(sometimes also can be straight through connector). For some application which need very stiff capability, then use PCB circuit membrane switch.

Hotbar Lamination (Heatseal Lamination) of FFC and FPC Tail to PET/ITO/PCB/FPC Circuit Layer:
Sometimes the customer need use the separate FPC or FFC tail connected to the membrane switch PET or PCB or FPC circuit layer, and for the capacitive membrane switches also have such kind of application, then the hotbar lamination (or called pluse hot press lamination, or heatseal lamination) becomes necessary in these application fields. Rubber Keypad Switches

Capacitive Membrane Switches

Membrane switches and user interface membrane keypads technology in China mainland. LUPHITOUCH is also an ISO9001, ISO13485, ISO14001, and OHSAS18001, certified manufacturer. Our capacitive touch membrane keypad consists of one or more capacitive touch buttons.

We print the capacitive touch buttons/sensors on PET circuit with the transparent conductive ink. We also use ITO etching technology to make the capacitive touch buttons/sensors.
Through the customized IC chip to control the touch function wanted. Except for the capacitive touch keypads we also manufacture the capacitive touch sensor circuits.

By capacitive touch technology, the overlay materials can be very diverse and not only limited to PET or PC super thin films. For the normal membrane keypads, the function triggered by the mechanical buttons(metal domes or Polydome) and also the common membrane keypads only can use PET, PC film for the graphic overlay.

Use a heavy force to press the buttons to make the conductive pads of the Polydome ormetal domes connected to the conductive pads on circuit layer, then become a loop circuit and occur the function. But for the capacitive touch membrane keypads or circuits, it is different. We use a variety of overlay materials such as thick glass, PMMA, Polycarbonate panels, etc. The material choice is no longer limited to only a very thin film material, on the contrary, the options are not endless.

Waterproof Membrane Switches

Membrane switches also called membrane keypads to have very wide applications and also have many different using environments. For example in a wet environment, outdoor under sunshine UV and bad weather of rain, boat sailing on the sea, etc. Then a waterproof and anti-UV membrane keypads are necessary for such kind of special application.

LUPHITOUCH manufactured waterproof membrane keypads can meet IP67 and NEMA-4 waterproof standard. For outdoor use, especially exposed under the sunshine UV, anti-UV membrane keypads are also necessary. The common membrane keypads can be easily damaged by strong ultraviolet rays. Although no impact on the function, the graphic overlay will have become ugly and the printed graphics can be faded in a not long time.

For waterproof keypads, we can design a waterproof frame on the membrane keypads to prevent the water from going into the circuit. Also can use rubber keypad wrapped the PCB circuit and use seal the connection circle.

In these special environment applications, the anti-UV and waterproof membrane keypads quality are very important. If the water went into the circuit it will cause your control board failure and then easily cause safety accidents. Backlighting Membrane Switches

Backlighting Membrane Switches means that there is a light source from the backside to light the graphic overlay and provide the indication information to users or when the product used in the night or dark environment it can light the graphic and make the users or workers make buttons press operation correctly and avoid pressing wrong buttons.

There are several types of backlighting ways for the membrane switches. They are:
 LED backlighting membrane switches
 EL lamp backlighting membrane switches
 LGF(Light Guide Film) backlighting membrane switches
 Fiber backlighting membrane switches (seldom used nowadays due to their complex manufacturing process and very high cost. It has been replaced by EL lamp backlighting and LGF backlighting technology

For the LED backlighting keypads, the graphic overlay lighted by the backside LEDs assembled on the flex or rigid circuit layer. In this way, it is very simple and also economical.
But it couldn’t get an even lighting effect on the surface. For this backlighting method, the LEDs can be assembled under centered buttons also can be assembled beside the buttons or other areas. For the products need each button to be backlighted, usually design the LEDs under the center of the buttons, then use the center holed metal domes and print transparent color on the graphic overlay.

In this way, the center button will be much brighter than the sides of it. But this way is easy to achieve and also its cost is the lowest. This is suitable for those products with no very high requirement for the evenness of the backlighting.

Backpanel Membrane Keypads

The backpanel membrane switche or membrane keypad is flexible, therefore it is possible to assemble it on top of any machine, equipment, device. But sometimes it needs a back support panel to enhance its inflexibility, or at customer end machine there is a cabinet and need screws and back panel to install the keypad on the machine or device by the screws, then under such kind of application, the membrane keypad with the back panel and even with screws are necessary.

If just need to enhance the keypad’s inflexibility, you can add a PMMA/PC/FR4, etc. another back support panel. When you design your cabinet with screw holes and embed the keypad module assembly. Then you need to use hardware back panels, like stainless steel panel, Al panel, etc. And also most times need to assemble the screws, bolts on the metal back panel.

Super Big Size Membrane Switches

For membrane switches, the outshape dimensions are usually not too big. But for some special applications, like the super big machines, station-indicator on subway etc. the membrane switch or graphic overlay dimension is very big, then the normal used screen printing machine and cutting machine are not workable for such kind of big size products. An overlay is a kind of silk screen printed or digital printed graphic sheet or panel that is placed on the surface of a product. In addition, Graphic overlays provide a high-quality finish for products, communicate messages, and act as the interface between people and machines. You can make it in a number of ways, however, this greatly depends upon the requirements of the application.

It is possible to print a wide variety of graphic effects on different materials. An adhesive layer covers the underside along with a liner. During assembly, you remove the liner so the graphic can be stick onto the surface of the product. Overlays can be thick or thin, depending on the desired look. They can be just a few colors or they can be photographic in appearance.

Display Window OCA Lamination Touchscreen / LCD / Lens Membrane Keypads
For many membrane switches or graphic overlays have display windows. Sometimes they need assemble a touchscreen panel or LCD or PC lens on backside of the windows. How to make such kind of assembly? There are two methods. One is frame assembly and the other one is OCA full lamination. By the OCA full lamination technology, it can get more better display performance with more higher light transmission capability. At the same time it also can avoid the Newton rings on display window. The OCA  is a kind of optical adhesive and make OCA full lamination needs very high grade production environment. Dome Arrays

Dome array is a kind of adhesive sheet with many tactile metal domes fixed on it. The dome array is manily used for keyboards, operation buttons, handheld PADs, old fashion button-press handphones etc. The dome array can be directly assembled on the printed circuit board or membrane switch. There are many kinds of metal domes can be used on the dome arrays, like round domes, triangle domes, 4-leg metal domes etc. The metal domes also have stainless steel ones, Ni-plated ones, gold plated ones etc. The dome array consists of pre-cutted acrylic adhesive with metal domes and release paper. To assemble the dome array is also very easy, just peel off the release paper and align it with the circuit board and then laminate them together tightly and flatly.
