What is Rubber Keypad?

Silicone rubber keypads are widely used in testing instruments, handheld terminals, mechanical equipment, military equipment, measuring instruments, boats and yachts, rail transportation, and other fields due to their excellent heat resistance, cold resistance, environmental resistance, electrical insulation, fatigue resistance, and other characteristics. When developing and designing silicone keypads, it is necessary to consider the diameter, length, width, height, thickness, key travel distance, actuation force requirements, product hardness, color, and conductive requirements of silicone rubber products.

Application Suggestions for Silicone Rubber Keypads With Different Actuation Forces

  Approximately 50-80g: generally suitable for silicone keypads on computer keyboards and calculators. This range has low pressure, making it easy to press, suitable for buttons that are frequently clicked.
  Approximately 80-120g: generally suitable for electrical buttons and remote control buttons. The pressure is moderate, providing a comfortable feel and good rebound.
  Approximately 120-180g: generally suitable for impact devices, industrial instruments, and mechanical remote controls. The pressure is significantly higher, suitable for larger silicone keypads, providing superior rebound but not ideal for products with very frequent clicks.
  Above 180g: these silicone keypads with higher pressure are less common and are suitable for special industries such as medical, aviation, industrial control, marine and mechanical equipment. Frequent use in a short period can cause finger fatigue.

Silicone Keypad Switch Subassemblies

A silicone keypad switch(also called rubber keypad switch) is an electronic component composed of an upper silicone rubber keypad and a bottom electronic circuit layer. The silicone keypad itself does not have any functionality, it is purely an input device. To transmit the "press-button" signal to the client control board, a circuit is needed as the carrier for signal transmission. In a silicone switch, the electronic circuit can be PET, PCB, or FPC, with PCB being the most common. Generally, the back of the silicone keypad has conductive carbon pills. When the button is pressed, the conductive carbon pills contact the keys’ conductive pads on the circuit below, becoming an electrical circuit loop. In addition to conductive carbon pills, metal domes from membrane switches can also be used for electrical connection. By assembling LEDs on the circuit and using laser etched backlit characters, a backlit silicone keypad subassembly can be created. Additionally, PET graphic overlays can be attached to the surface of the silicone keypads, exposing only the buttons. The edges of the silicone keypads can also be designed with edging to enclose the circuit layer below, achieving better waterproofing.
